The Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry, Russian Academy of Sciences
(IGEM RAS)
Main goal of the Institute is execution of basic scientific research in the field of the Earth’s sciences. The principal directions of scientific studies of the Institute are:
- Geology of ore deposits, Metallogeny;
- Petrology;
- Mineralogy and Crystal-chemistry;
- Geochemistry;
- Isotope geochemistry and Geochronology;
- Radiogeology and Radioecology;
- Geoinformatics.
Besides its general activity, the Institute is involved in some business and other profitable activity serving to support its main scientific activity provided by the Statute of the Institute.
Institute continues to promote the Scientific schools created by outstanding Russian scientists – Academicians V.I.Vernadsky, A.E.Fersmann, N.V.Belov, F.Yu.Loevinson-Lessing, A.N.Zavaritsky, D.S.Belyankin, A.G.Betekhtin, D.I.Shcherbakov, D.S.Korzhinskii, F.V.Chukhrov, N.A.Shilo. Close interrelashions among teams of diverse specialization allow to advance and develop new urgent scientific directions and solve the most important applied problems.
 The Institute won a universal recognition as a leader of Russian science in the field of radiogeochemistry and radiogeoecology. The fundamental studies of processes of dispersal and concentration of natural and technogenic radionuclides in natural environment allowed to propose some direct measures of safe isolation of radioactive waste from the ecosphere, rehabilitation of radiationally polluted territories and cleaning of groundwaters from the radioactive pollution. The Institute maintains a position of leading institution in National science in development of the theory ore formation, petrology, metasomatism and metamorphism, genetic mineralogy and crystal-chemistry, ore geochemistry and geochemistry of the Earth’s mantle. Also active is development of studies in the field of geoinformatics. The Institute created a set of analytical labs for investigation of rocks and minerals on world standard level.
Seven scientists of the Institute were awarded with the Lenin prize and 21 – with the State prizes. Two scientists were awarded with the honorary title of Hero of the Socialist Labor.
The Institute hosts Interdisciplinary Petrographic Committee and Interdisciplinary Committee on Ore Formation. The IGEM was co-foundator of two scientific journals – “Geology of Ore Deposits” and “Petrology”.
The base of common Educational-Scientific Centre of IGEM and High College of Efficient Nature Management of D.I.Mendeleev Russian Chemical-Technological University is used for education of high-qualified personnel on speciality “Nature Management” to prepare specialists in ecology and nature management. The Institute is used for training probationers-students from Geological faculty of Moscow University, Moscow Geological-Prospecting Academy, Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship.
In the Institute, there are two special Councils on Ph.D. and D.Sc. theses approval for specialities: 25.00.04 – Petrology, Volcanology; 25.00.09 – Geochemistry and Geochemical Prospecting for Mineral Commodities; 25.00.36 – Geoecology; 25.00.05 – Mineralogy and Crystallography; 25.00.11 – Geology, Prospecting and Development of Solid Mineral Commodities, Minerogenesis; 25.00.35 – Geoinformatics. The Institute provides a postgraduate education for high qualification personnel preparation on all above specialities (03.00.16 – Ecology included).
The Institute keeps lasting scientific cooperation with the scientific organizations of Russian Academy of Sciences, high education institutions, applied science institutes of Ministry of Atomic Energy, Ministry of Natural Resources, other Ministries, as well as with the foreign scientific organizations of the USA, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Austria, China and many other countries.
