Concise History of the Institute

Official history of creation of the Institute had started in 1930 by organizing four scientific research institutes – Mineralogical, Geochemical, Petrographic (PETRIN) and Geological (GIN) on the base of the former Peter-the-Great Geological and Mineralogical Museum. Later in 1932 Geochemical and Mineralogical institutes have been united to become the M.V. Lomonosov Institute of Geochemistry, Mineralogy, and Crystallography (LIGEM). In 1937 LIGEM, PETRIN and GIN have been united to the Institute of Geological Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, which was subdivided into two institutes – IGEM and GIN.
Now the Institute of Geology of Ore Deposits, Petrography, Mineralogy, and Geochemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences is a leading scientific institute of Russia. Its main activity is related to development of basic problems of geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of mineral deposits of various commodities and development of theoretical bases of Petrology, Physical Geochemistry, Radiogeology and Radioecology.
